In Tanzania, whether you are a soccer fan or not, you most likely
know about Yanga [Young Africans S.C] and Simba SC. These are two
biggest soccer clubs in the country. They are big in terms of fans base,
resources and you name it. At clubs level, they are, by far, the face
of Tanzania. I have met friends from all over the world [especially
Africa] that easily recognize these two teams.
When Yanga and Simba are playing, you will feel it. These two giants are meeting this Saturday for a Premier League encounter in the first round of the league sponsored by Vodacom Tanzania. The clash will be at the National Stadium in Dar-es-salaam.
Apart from knowing Yanga and Simba, most Tanzanians have their favorite team among these. You are either Yanga or Simba. Yanga with their traditional yellow and green colors is believed to have more fans across the land than their rival Simba who are traditionally wearing Red and White jerseys.
By club locations, these two teams could be considered “neighbors”. Yanga, also known as Watoto Wa Jangwani, have their headquarters at Jangwani Street just few miles away from Simba “Watoto Wa Msimbazi” at Msimbazi Street. The area can be called Greater Kariakoo Area[GKA]
When Yanga and Simba meet, a lot are at stake. Players knows that a missed opportunity against the rival, would mean your days are numbered at the club. Coaches are almost guaranteed contract renewal with a win. Anything less than a win simply means, you can wake up the next day to the worst national newspaper headline; Yanga/Simba Fires Their Coach.
For the record, I am Yanga. I therefore wishes them a win[ if you are Simba, I know you wish them a win too]. Let’s meet at the stadium.
