Last Saturday, the world witnessed a historic annual CNN-Multichoice Journalist Award ceremony on the continent, hosted for the first time in our commercial capital, Dar Es Salaam.
The choice of Tanzania is not only an unprecedented honor to the great peaceful nation on the continent, but a rare opportunity to showcase Tanzania and open its market to the world.
I congratulate the event organizers and His Excellency the President, Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, for being the Guest of Honour, for his outstanding economic diplomacy skills and unending efforts in showcasing Tanzania to the world.
As usual, the president’s speech looked at quantity rather than quality, boasting to have more media outlets in the country than neighbors – even with mounting insecurity of media practitioners and existence of Draconian Newspapers Act, 1976 and National Security Act, 1970 which limit press freedom as we approach 2015 general elections, the standard rhetoric maintained that the government will soon table the Freedom of Information and Media Services Bills in parliament, a promise left unattended by the Ministry of Information since begin of his second term in office back in 2006.
Despite government’s slow pace in implementing commitments on free press, we should acknowledge the fact that the head of state is at least committed to transparency and open government more than his predecessors, at least by signing international commitments and protocols on transparency such as the Open Government Partnership, though more work needs to be done in getting Media Freedom Bill and Services Act in place before busy and tense election period comes in.

Categories and winners
The award categories covered economics and business, press freedom, culture, sports, photo journalism, sports reporting and the environment. Others included Portuguese and French stories awards. Winners wrote moving and interesting stories. To mention a few; Bento Venâncio, Jornal Domingo, Mozambique investigated how lack of transparency in procurement of automobiles in Mozambique leads to fraud, Evelyn Watta, a sports reporter from Kenya revealed the value of Senegal’s mythical Wrestling heritage to the West African nation. The most touching of all was Press Freedom Award handed to the wife of jailed Swazi journalist, Bheki Makhubu who is facing sedition for penning columns supporting a state clerk who was charged for trying to put right the system that allowed judicial officers to misuse public cars.
My sincere congratulations should go to the only brave Tanzanian nominee, one Dickson Ng’hily whose Dar traffic jam story was a concern of all Dar commuters;  too bad the judges underestimated the significance of his story in pushing authorities in fast growing African cities to expand the road network.
However, a question remains; where were the rest of Tanzanian journalists?  it is believed the majority did not submit their work for some reason – probably due to  the fact that everyone was very busy reporting on “katiba” stunning headlines “serikali mbili au tatu” instead of simple local stories that could create positive impact in the community! If the awards had a politics category, I am sure we would have beaten the Kenyans and West Africans for our genius in making stunning political headlines.
Yes! We would have defeated our neighbours in Kenya who have outperformed the whole of East Africa in this year’s awards, yet again. In fact it is not the first time; even in the prestigious annual Kili Marathon held in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region, Kenyans end up winning more trophies while we the hosts are reduced to mere spectators each year.

President Jakaya Kikwete presents the overall ‘CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year’ Award to Joseph Mathenge. Looking on is Mathenge’s son, Geoff Kihato.
Overall winner
I was personally moved by the story of the overall winner, Joseph Mathenge and his son who convinced father to abandon his private photography tender aimed at raising funds for son’s cancer treatment and instead rushed to the Westgate Mall to capture the very first photos that revealed the images of terror to the whole world.
Way forward
It is high time Tanzanian journalists be proud of their work and confident to present it in future awards, even when unsure of winning. More quantity will help identify quality stories that will make all of us proud.
Organizers should also add a social media category to honour and recognize excellent work by social media which uses the internet and citizen journalism to report sensational stories as they happen swifter than the traditional media itself.
On the other hand, award organizers should add a Swahili story category alongside Portuguese and French story awards for it is an African Union (AU) language widely spoken across East and Central Africa. Moreover, I would like to advise CNN to introduce a CNN Swahili language service in East and Central Africa, emulating BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio France International and VOA in giving local journalists in the broader Swahili speaking East and Central African region to cover and explain local stories to the world.

14 UK companies cutting across various sectors e.g. Education and Training, Security, Consultancy, Healthcare amongst others are hoping to penetrate new trade opportunities within Tanzania by taking part in UKTI London and South East trade mission to Tanzania between October 22nd-24th 2014. This is the first, independent visit by UKTI London and South East to Tanzania and East Africa.
Tanzania is fast emerging as a thriving commercial entity with a GDP growth rate of over 7% year upon year. The major city of Dar es Salaam where we will be staying is the centre of most government activity as well as being the major commercial centre with its own deep water port with trading links to the landlocked countries of Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.
Tanzania not only has some of the best wildlife in the world but also huge natural resources ranging from gemstones to natural gas. As such, it is fast becoming the regional hub for a number of multinational corporations. This will be an exciting opportunity for UK businesses to see what they can bring to the country.

They will also have a chance to speak directly with business at a Business to Business event scheduled for Thursday, 23rd October at the Serena Hotel from 1.00 to 4.00pm. We believe this will create a great opportunity for the visiting companies to meet and discuss business directly with business.
David Billingsby, UKTI International Trade Adviser, who will lead the London delegation, said:
“Having worked in Tanzania before, I know the excellence of the reception these British companies will receive. I am certain that the mission will be successful and the delegates will be saying Asante sana!”

Vitamin A deficiency is widely prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa
Just ahead of World Food Day, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (http://goo.gl/AwrAkl) has established that ‘orange’ vitamin A maize increases vitamin A storage in the body. This maize has been conventionally bred (non-GMO) to have higher levels of beta-carotene, a naturally occurring plant pigment that the body then converts into vitamin A.
Lack of sufficient vitamin A blinds up to 500,000 children annually and increases the risk of death from disease (such as diarrhea in children). Vitamin A deficiency is widely prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. Foods that are good sources of vitamin A, such as orange fruits, dark leafy vegetables, or meat, are not always available, or may be too expensive in some regions. In many African countries, people eat large amounts of staple foods like cassava or maize. For example, in Zambia, people eat up to a pound of white maize daily. However, this white maize provides no beta-carotene. Switching to orange maize, which is rich in beta-carotene, could potentially provide maize-dependent populations with up to half their daily vitamin A needs.
In this controlled efficacy study, children from the Eastern Province of Zambia were randomly assigned to three feeding groups and received either white maize, orange maize, or a daily vitamin A supplement. After three months, both groups that received either the orange maize or vitamin A supplements showed significant increases in their total body stores of vitamin A, with no changes observed in the group that received white maize.

Lead scientist Sherry Tanumihardjo said “we were surprised to find that most of the children in this study already had substantial stores of vitamin A. We attribute this to the success of fortifying sugar with vitamin A, the provision of vitamin A supplements to young children, and perhaps better diets.  Yet, despite having adequate vitamin A stores, we still saw this store increase in children as a result of eating the orange maize.  So, I’m confident that orange maize would be especially effective in increasing body stores of vitamin A in populations suffering from vitamin A deficiency.” Unlike the form of vitamin A found in supplements and fortified foods, the body regulates conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A, and consuming high levels of beta-carotene is not harmful to health.
Several orange maize varieties have been released by the governments of Zambia and Nigeria. In Zambia, HarvestPlus (http://www.harvestplus.org) has provided orange maize to more than 10,000 farming households and is now working with the private sector with the goal of reaching 100,000 famers by 2015. According to Eliab Simpungwe, HarvestPlus Country Manager for Zambia, “the orange maize has been embraced by consumers once they have had a chance to taste it. When they also understand the benefits of vitamin A in the diets they are all the more enthusiastic about orange maize.”  The orange maize varieties released are also high yielding, disease and virus resistant, and drought tolerant.
The Zambian Government has officially recognized biofortification, which it includes in the National Food and Nutrition Strategic Plan for Zambia 2011-2015. Musonda Mofu, Acting Executive Director of the National Food and Nutrition Commission in Zambia and who was also on the study team, said “there are still many pockets where vitamin A deficiency remains a problem in Zambia. Food-based approaches such as orange maize can provide people—especially women and children—with a good portion of their daily vitamin A needs through nshima or other traditional foods made from maize, that we Zambians eat every day. For us, this is cost-effective and a safe approach to improving nutrition.”
HarvestPlus and its partners have developed and disseminated other conventionally bred crops to provide needed vitamins and minerals in the diet.  These are vitamin A cassava (Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria), vitamin A orange sweet potato (throughout Sub-Saharan Africa) and iron beans (Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda).  Zinc wheat and rice and iron pearl millet have been targeted to South Asia.

We have discovered as we get older how amazing it that many so called “good friends” will drop you out of their “social circles” simply because of a change of circumstances in your life or because you mature in your beliefs and adopt new attitudes to life.

In effect they are not “friends” at all but simply “associates” because they have only “associated” with us because of a temporary or even long term common cause such as belonging to the same club or association; sharing the same beliefs for a period of time; working in the same places together; being related by family and living nearby.

True friends love you for who you are and wherever you are. Kiboko Yako-MwanaFA Feat.Ali Kiba
I know…this kind of news might have stopped the laughter in some people as if someone has turned a valve in their chest. You’d understand them though, right? It is one collaboration that few saw it coming but now that the news is on the carpet, everyone is wondering why this didn’t happen sooner. Lucky, some of you don’t gonna weep. All you need to do is to spend the next few days in a state of controlled excitement because MwanaFA is coming up with Ali Kiba in Kiboko Yako.
Since the release of #Mfalme, MwanaFA sat back and enjoyed the success of that single by touring across the land. He recently confirmed with me that he was busy. That business, as it turns out, included hours at MJ Records with Marco Chali cooking something with Ali Kiba who is also accelerating from where he paused with Mwana and Kimasomaso.
What makes this project even more interesting is Marco Chali. There is a reason they now prefer to call him Dr. He knows his stuff. You are waiting…aren’t you? Wait..did you see the artwork? You know what time it is,right? Legendary cartoonist, Masoud Kipanya, reminds us why he is still seating on top. I loved this work.
Time flies. Time changes. Nothing remains the same. If it does, you should be scared. It’s unusual. That is life. Next time someone moves your cheese, please don’t scream. Just calmly look for it [and you will find it] then act like someone brand new.

For Lady Jaydee, 2014 could be another year for injecting changes. It could be a business strategy. Or it could be what gossip cops are hanging into it; love that isn’t love no more. Whatever the case, she has decided to “move on”. She has a new manager. His name is Webiro N. Wassira populary known as Wakazi.

Wakazi is an artist. He comes along as someone who has seen both worlds. A fella who grew up in Ukonga Dar-es-salaam before moving to US and discovered deeper his music roots and inspiration in Chicago [windy city and mecca of black race], he definitely carries in his cabinet something to offer. After all, music management is all about understanding how the industry works and high negotiation skills. He has been into it, he is into it and from what I know, he ain’t planning into going anywhere else anytime soon. His candidacy can be sealed with his eagerness to work hard [and play hard]. Everyone needs a manager who can balance that.

Before tapping Wakazi as her Manager, Lady JayDee aka Komando was managed for years by Gardner G. Habash, her husband of 9 years. Lately, there has been countless of rumors and reports that the two are no longer together. So far, none of them have been ready and available to confirm or dispute the rumors.
